Who was the first Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor?

The first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor was Corporal John F. Mackie, for actions at Fort Wagner during the Civil War. The Medal of Honor was created to recognize extraordinary bravery, and Mackie demonstrated that level of valor by advancing under heavy enemy fire to seize the Confederate flag and bring it back to his lines. His bold, selfless act under fire set a precedent for Marine heroism and earned him the distinction of being the earliest Marine recipient. The other names listed later earned the medal in different battles and eras, but Mackie holds the original distinction for Marines.
