Who is known as the Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps?

The title Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps goes to Archibald Henderson. He served as Commandant for an extraordinary 38 years, from 1820 to 1859—the longest tenure in the Corps’ history. That lengthy, steady leadership helped shape the modern Marine Corps through periods of growth, discipline, and professional development, earning him the enduring nickname. Other leaders listed were influential in their own right, but none accumulated the same combination of long service and formative impact that defines Henderson’s legacy.
